As a subdeacon at my church, the role is more taking care of the celebrants so that THEY can look fantastic. We hold their book while they read the Gospel, make sure that whatever they’re reaching for is handed to them, turn their pages so they don’t get lost in the middle of the consecration, and even wash their hands!
